Adventure Begins - an introduction

Hello everyone!

My itch.io page has been existing for a while now, but yesterday marked the day of my very first release - Adventure Begins: the Overworld Collection. This asset pack has been quite a labor of love - also a love letter to my cherished memories and dreams as a kid playing action rpgs.  Fittingly, its very title has a few different meanings: the first being its general mood and the resources provided, tailored around the first phases of an adventure, featuring bright environment tiles, a comfy village and a few mysterious structures too.

Another, more personal meaning - if you'll forgive me - resides in the fact that 2024 will be my first year as a fulltime pixel art freelance. This is also the beginning of an adventure for me! I have been doing pixel art since 2004 and I have always been doing freelance to a certain extent, but never as my main, full-time occupation (which was moviemaking and set design).

The very idea of Overworld means a lot to me: it's the bright side of the adventure, the open air, the mysteries being scattered around - the far reaches of a world blessed by wind, bathed in the red sunset, or shining in the moonlight. I've been testint the tilesets quite a lot recently. Take a look:

Testing tilesets - Adventure Begins

An overworld location made using the assets, showcasing a maze-structure, ancient ruins and a mysterious city in the south, with its palaces and a long courtyard

I also wanted to provide a little option for palette change, according to the time of the day. You can find these three basic colors (Daylight, Sunset and Night time) in the complete release of the tileset, complete of their respective animated tileset!

Palette variations

The standard set of Adventure Begins comes with three palettes, for each time of the day, in the classic tradition of handheld monster games.

What has the future in store?

  • Rpgmaker compatibility, for starters! I've been learning a bit about the latest releases (the last time I used rpgmaker, it was Rpgmaker XP and Rpgmaker 2003, before that, was my first experience ever with maps, tilesets and gamedev!). It will be a free update, coming with for each itch purchase!
  • Our adventure has just began and I guess it'll soon be time to head... below. Adventures Below will be the other side of the coin: dungeons, mysteries, crypts and roots, ancient civilization relics... everything that will be a test to the hero. I am planning this asset for late February. Available in itch.io bundle and for Patreon subscribers!

Thank you for being here, with this new project. I can't wait to bring you more about my art - but what I am really craving for is your ideas and the use of my tiles in your projects.
Thank you,

Alessandro a.k.a. Zaebucca
